The staking calculator uses the current staking reward paid out to BISON customers as the basis for its calculations. The staking reward is based on the network reward, the amount of which can change hourly depending on protocol activity (see our special staking conditions). The actual amount of staking rewards and the achievable return may therefore fluctuate and could be higher or lower than expected. A fixed return cannot be predicted or guaranteed. The values provided are merely an estimate based on the current staking rewards paid out to BISON customers.

What you should know about Ethereum staking

Table of contents

  • When you stake Ethereum, you make your ETH available to the network and help validate transactions and confirm new blocks.
  • In return, you receive staking rewards in the form of additional ETH—similar to interest or dividends. With BISON, the annual return (APR) ranges from 2% to 5%.
  • While running your own validator requires 32 ETH, you can participate with smaller amounts through third-party providers and staking pools. With BISON, you can start staking from as little as 0.005 ETH.
  • If you unstake your ETH, they remain locked during the unstaking period and cannot be traded or withdrawn. With BISON, this period typically ranges from 7 to 45 days.
  • Risks associated with Ethereum staking include technical issues or validator errors. In rare cases, slashing may occur—however, BISON provides insurance coverage against this risk.

What is Ethereum staking?

When you stake Ethereum, you make your ETH available to help support the security and operation of the blockchain. The network uses a proof-of-stake mechanism, where transactions are validated by participants who have staked their coins.

By staking ETH, you support this process and help confirm new blocks and process transactions. In return, you receive regular staking rewards in the form of additional ETH. Simply put, these can be compared to interest on cash deposits or dividends on stocks

Are there Ethereum staking ETFs?
There are no traditional ETFs in this context. However, you can invest in exchange-traded products (ETPs) that hold Ethereum and may also participate in staking. One example is the 21Shares Ethereum Staking ETP (ISIN: CH0454664027). With BISON, you stake your ETH directly and in just a few clicks—making it simpler than using an ETP.

How does Ethereum staking work?

The basic principle of Ethereum staking can be explained as follows:

  • ETH is committed to the network: Participants allocate their ETH as a stake.
  • Validators secure the blockchain: Using these staked ETH, they validate transactions and confirm new blocks.
  • The network selects validators: The validator responsible for confirming a block is chosen algorithmically.
  • Rewards as an incentive: In return for their participation, validators receive additional ETH in the form of staking rewards.

Running your own validator requires at least 32 ETH as well as a continuously operating technical infrastructure. Alternatively, you can participate in staking with smaller amounts through providers (and apps) such as BISON.

How high are the staking rewards for Ethereum?

The amount of staking rewards in Ethereum is not fixed and depends on several factors, such as the total amount of ETH staked, network activity, and the number of validators. As a general rule, the more ETH is staked across the network, the lower the rewards per participant—and vice versa. With BISON, you can earn an estimated annual return (APR) of 2% to 5% through Ethereum staking.

How long is Ethereum unavailable during staking?

While your ETH is staked, it is part of the network and you do not have access to it. If you decide to unstake, an unstaking process begins. The duration depends on network conditions and the number of validators. With BISON, this period typically ranges from 7 to 45 days. During this time, your ETH remains unavailable and cannot be traded or withdrawn.

How to stake Ethereum

There are three ways to participate in Ethereum staking: by running your own validator, through a staking pool, or via a provider like BISON. The latter is the simplest option.
Here’s how Ethereum staking works with BISON:

  1. Buy or hold Ethereum: Buy Ethereum (ETH) in the BISON app or transfer ETH to your portfolio if you don’t already hold any there.
  2. Start staking: Select Ethereum in the staking section and choose how much ETH you want to stake. You can start from as little as 0.005 ETH.
  3. Your ETH is staked: Your ETH is added to the staking process and helps support the Ethereum network in validating transactions.
  4. Receive staking rewards: In return for your participation, you receive regular staking rewards, credited weekly as additional ETH.

What are the risks of ETH staking?

Ethereum staking involves certain risks, particularly technical issues and validator-related errors. One key risk to be aware of is slashing—a portion of your staked ETH may be lost if a validator violates network rules or encounters technical failures. With BISON, you are protected against this risk by a dedicated insurance developed together with Munich Re.

Note on staking service:
Please note that this service is currently not regulated under MiCAR and lacks the protections and oversight established by EU regulations. For comprehensive information on staking risks, please refer to the Special Terms and Conditions for Staking.
