What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a popular cryptocurrency that is traded by many investors every day. At the end of May 2024, for example, its daily trading volume was around EUR 17 billion, compared with around EUR 26 billion for Bitcoin. Ethereum was first launched[SG3.1][SG3.2] in 2015. The term “Ethereum” refers not only to the cryptocurrency itself, but also to a platform for smart contracts. In other words, Ethereum can be used as a platform for blockchain-based contracts. When you buy Ethereum, you are investing in the idea that more and more projects and companies will use Ethereum in the future, which could support its price over the long term.

How can you buy Ethereum (ETH)?

There are various ways to trade Ethereum, some of which are mainly used by crypto enthusiasts. For most investors, however, a crypto trading platform is the easiest place to start. Crypto investors usually need a wallet, which is a type of account used to store cryptocurrency. As this can be complex for some investors, trading platforms such as BISON allow you to trade cryptocurrencies in a similar way to stocks. You open an account with BISON, deposit money, and buy Ethereum. If you want to sell your Ethereum again later, you can do so just as easily. BISON takes care of the custody of your cryptocurrency, making buying Ethereum simple, secure, and smart.

Have you bought Ethereum with BISON and would like to transfer your coins to your own private hardware or software wallet later on? That is also possible with BISON—free of charge. Transferring cryptocurrency to your own wallet is not possible with every crypto exchange and crypto broker. If this is important to you, you should check this in advance. Some providers also charge a fee for this.

Buy Ethereum certificates on traditional exchanges

Another way to invest in Ethereum is to buy what’s known as Ethereum certificates. Investors can purchase these certificates on traditional exchanges, but they need a securities account to do so, just as they would when trading stocks. With a certificate, investors gain exposure to the cryptocurrency, but do not own actual Ethereum coins and cannot participate directly in crypto trading. Similar to a CFD, a certificate allows investors to participate in the cryptocurrency’s price movements. However, this is a highly speculative and particularly risky form of investment.

Ethereum CFDs – Know what type of ETH you are buying

When buying Ethereum, it is important to understand the difference between actual Ethereum and Ethereum CFDs (Contracts for Difference). While CFDs may sometimes have lower trading costs, you do not actually own any Ethereum when trading a CFD. CFDs are often used for leveraged trading, allowing you to trade larger positions with a smaller initial investment. However, leverage also increases both the potential returns and the risks.

It is also important to know that some crypto exchanges only offer Ethereum CFD trading. CFDs are generally less suitable for long-term investors. Another key difference is that you cannot transfer Ethereum CFDs to your own wallet, as you do not own the underlying ETH. This means you remain dependent on the provider. Before investing, make sure you understand exactly what type of Ethereum product you are buying, as well as the advantages and disadvantages it offers.

Where can you buy Ethereum?

There are various ways to buy Ethereum or Ether coins. Depending on the provider, users may have access to a different range of cryptocurrencies.

Buying Ethereum via a trading platform

Buying Ethereum through a platform like BISON is, above all, simple and reliable. BISON, powered by Boerse Stuttgart Group, enables investors to buy and sell cryptocurrencies conveniently. At BISON, users can buy digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Ripple (XRP) without needing their own wallet. After completing verification, users can start investing in cryptocurrencies directly with BISON.

Buying Ethereum on a cryptocurrency marketplace

A cryptocurrency marketplace is another way to buy cryptocurrencies such as Ethereum, Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Chainlink, Litecoin, Ripple (XRP), or Uniswap and carry out transactions. On a marketplace, buyers must first find a trading partner. In addition, prices often vary between different offers, meaning there is no single price that buyers can rely on. Marketplaces for buying Ether coins also charge different transaction fees.

Buying Ethereum through a cryptocurrency exchange

Another way to buy Ethereum is through a crypto exchange. Many large, well-known crypto exchanges are currently based abroad, which can make the process lengthy and complex. Exchanges for Ethereum and other digital currencies may also charge different fees for transactions and withdrawals. To buy Ethereum through a cryptocurrency exchange, investors must first create an account and verify their identity. For many users, it is not immediately clear whether a provider is a crypto exchange or a crypto broker, also known as a trading platform. It is advisable to choose a provider that is regulated in Germany. At the very least, the provider should be regulated within the EU.

Buying Ethereum with BISON

An alternative to crypto marketplaces and cryptocurrency exchanges is BISON, the crypto platform of the Boerse Stuttgart Group. BISON is “Made in Germany”: you buy your cryptocurrencies in Germany and, unlike with many exchanges and marketplaces, you have access to a German-speaking contact person at any time. With BISON, buying Ethereum is simple and convenient.

  • Step 1: Registration
Download the BISON app. Create an account by entering your email address and choosing a password. You will then have access to the BISON interface.
  • Step 2: Verification
To start trading, you need to verify your identity as part of the KYC process. You will need a valid identity document, such as an ID card or passport. Once you have successfully completed verification via video chat and your account has been activated, you can start investing in cryptocurrencies.
  • Step 3: Deposit funds
You can conveniently transfer money to your BISON account via bank transfer. The funds will usually arrive within one to three business days, allowing you to make your first Ethereum purchase. Depositing funds is simple, as it works like a standard bank transfer.
  • Step 4: Buy Ethereum
Open the app and tap on “Market.” Search for “Ethereum” and select it. You will then see the current market price in euros. Below the chart, you will find the “Buy” button. Tap on “Buy” and choose the amount you want to invest. You can either enter an amount in euros, such as EUR 1,000, or an amount in Ethereum, such as 0.5 ETH. After tapping “Next,” the current price will be offered to you for 10 seconds. Tap “OK, confirm” and you will own your first Ethereum (ETH).

Advantages of trading cryptocurrencies with BISON

  1. At BISON, you always invest directly in cryptocurrencies, not in CFDs, certificates, or other complex financial products. In exchange for your money, you receive real Ethereum units from EUWAX AG, a subsidiary of Boerse Stuttgart GmbH, which is always the trading partner for BISON users.

  2. You can withdraw your purchased coins at any time with just a few clicks or taps and store them in your own wallet. However, you do not have to do this, as BISON not only makes buying Ethereum simple and convenient, but also takes care of the reliable custody of your cryptocurrencies.

  3. Custody is provided by Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody GmbH, which is regulated by the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFin). Boerse Stuttgart Digital Custody, a subsidiary of the Boerse Stuttgart Group, holds the cryptocurrencies in fiduciary custody using a multi-level security concept. This means you do not need your own wallet to buy Ethereum with BISON.

  4. BISON also supports you with your tax return. The BISON Info Report includes a transaction overview and a calculation of realized gains and losses according to the FIFO method (First-In, First-Out). It also shows which gains and/or losses were realized with a holding period of less than or more than one year, and therefore whether they fall within or outside the speculation period.

What can you buy with Ethereum?

  • In theory, you can buy many things with Ethereum. Unlike Bitcoin, Litecoin, and other cryptocurrencies, Ethereum was not specifically developed as a digital means of payment. Nevertheless, ETH can be used to make payments. Many users use Ethereum to participate in Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) and invest in other emerging cryptocurrencies.
  • It is also technically possible to pay for a beer or coffee with Ethereum. In practice, however, this can be difficult, as there are even fewer places that accept Ethereum than Bitcoin. Apart from a few online shops and selected stores in major cities such as Berlin, Amsterdam, and London, there are currently few opportunities to buy everyday goods with Ethereum. For many people, Ethereum therefore serves more as an investment or asset than as a means of payment for everyday use.
  • In the digital world, Ethereum is primarily used for trading NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). These are often based on the Ethereum blockchain, meaning Ethereum is required for trading. For example, if you want to buy an Ethereum NFT on OpenSea, you first need to buy Ethereum through a crypto broker like BISON. Through tokenization, virtually any object can be represented on the Ethereum blockchain in a unique and tamper-proof way. Digital pets, football trading cards, virtual racing cars, popular GIFs, and digital artworks have already been traded as NFTs, sometimes for millions—paid with Ether (ETH). Entire marketplaces have now been created exclusively for trading NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain. In 2023, NFT trading volume amounted to approximately USD 12.6 billion.
  • There are also increasingly more applications that run on the Ethereum blockchain and require payment in Ethereum. A very simple example would be a calculator where the calculation results need to be stored immutably on the blockchain. A small amount of ETH must be paid for each calculation. Only then does the application start and calculate the result. This can then be traced on the blockchain.

How did the idea for the Ethereum cryptocurrency originate?

To help investors better understand the background and origins of the digital currency Ethereum, here are a few key facts:

  1. The digital currency Ethereum was developed in 2013 by Canadian-Russian mathematician Vitalik Buterin (*1994), after he became fascinated by Bitcoin and wanted to further develop the technology.
  2. Vitalik Buterin is the best-known face of the Ethereum Foundation. However, several other people were also involved in its founding: Mihai Alisie, Anthony Di Iorio, Amir Chetrit, Charles Hoskinson, Gavin Wood, Jeffrey Wilcke, and Joseph Lubin.
  3. Buterin had been involved with Bitcoin since 2011. He was also a co-founder of Bitcoin Magazine, one of the first reputable publications on cryptocurrencies, in 2012. Apparently, Buterin came up with the idea for Ethereum through a video game. He was bothered by the game’s complex payment system, which became the starting point for the digital currency Ethereum.
  4. The term “Ethereum” does not just refer to a cryptocurrency, but also to a platform for smart contracts. This means that Ethereum serves as a platform for blockchain-based contracts. Many companies and start-ups in the financial and insurance sectors now use this technology. What makes smart contracts special is that certain parameters can be stored on the blockchain in a tamper-proof way and trigger predefined actions when specific conditions are met. This can help avoid manual contract processes with documentation gaps and improve the speed and quality of underlying business processes. For example, if Person A transfers 1 ETH to wallet X, the smart contract ensures that Person A receives an NFT in their wallet.
  5. As of June 2024, Ethereum’s market capitalization is over EUR 400 billion, which is just below its all-time high. On March 12, 2024, its market capitalization was nearly EUR 450 billion.
