What is Axie Infinity about?
Many of us have played Pokémon, where you wander with a character through a world, battling other monsters in a turn-based combat system. Axie Infinity focuses entirely on player-based combat. Simplified, the game is similar to turn-based card games like Yu-Gi-Oh or Magic. However, in Axie Infinity, you only have your three monsters (Axies). In each round, you receive new cards that determine your possible actions, such as healing your Axie or attacking one of the three opposing Axies.
Additional elements include spells, accessories, runes, and items that can be collected or purchased with real money (crypto).
In Axie Infinity, you always play with three characters. Excluding the introductory mode, you must purchase three Axies before you can battle other players. Playing earns you points in the form of Smooth Love Potions (previously Small Love Potion), abbreviated as SLP. SLP is also a tradable coin, valued at 0.001249 euros in September 2023, with a market capitalization of 52 million euros. Since the collected points (SLP) are tradable, players can earn real money, which is why Axie Infinity is labeled a “Play to Earn” game.

Another source of income is breeding Axies. You can cross two Axies and inherit their traits. There are defined probabilities that influence which trait is inherited. Axies can take various forms, with over 500 different body parts, including water, animal, bird, beetle, plant, and reptile parts. Each type class has four rarity levels: common, rare, ultra-rare, and legendary. The rarest form is “Mystic”, only available in the game’s initial phase and cannot be inherited by new Axies.
How does Axie Infinity utilize blockchain and crypto technology?
The game is a blockchain-based game that incorporates various elements such as cryptocurrencies (coins), governance tokens, and NFTs. Additionally, Axie Infinity aspires to become a DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) in the long term, where users have control over the project.
There are two tokens in the game: Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) and Smooth Love Potions (SLP), and transactions are also made with Ethereum (ETH). While there are more tokens in the Axie Infinity ecosystem, they cannot be traded on cryptocurrency exchanges.
Holders of AXS get a stake in Axie’s decentralized organization and can participate in shaping the platform’s development, such as deciding on the allocation of funds from the ecosystem fund. SLP, on the other hand, is earned by playing the game and can be used for breeding new Axies or sold outright. Both AXS and SLP are ERC-20 tokens that can be traded on the Ethereum network.
Each Axie (the monster you play with) is an NFT, making it a unique collector’s item with varying value. Since each Axie possesses different traits of varying rarity, their value can fluctuate significantly, ranging from a few euros to several thousand euros.
The game includes various resources that can be traded on the Axie marketplace, including land plots that players can customize. In the world of Axie Infinity, known as Lunacia, there are 90,601 such plots, all of which are NFTs based on blockchain technology.
The game primarily uses the Ethereum blockchain. To make transactions faster and cheaper, the side-chain RONIN (a Layer-2 solution) was developed, saving users the high gas fees of the Ethereum blockchain. Ronin is intended not only to enhance the gaming experience but also to give Sky Mavis (the development team) better control over the future development and scaling of Axie Infinity. To protect Ronin, developers have put together an all-star lineup of players and partners from the crypto and NFT sectors to act as validators for the network. The Ronin sidechain is compatible with a special wallet for purchasing Axies and related items.
